Hamilton pulls out 2-1 snowy men's soccer win

CLINTON, NY -- Brian Marcantonio scored with 7:28 left in the second half to lift the Hamilton College men's soccer team to a 2-1 Liberty League win against visiting Union College at snowy Love Field on Oct. 20.

Christopher Breedlove took Hamilton's only corner kick of the second half and it was cleared by a Union defender out towards midfield to Marcantonio, who dribbled once before firing a high shot just under the crossbar from about 25 yards away.

Ian Hildebrand gave the Continentals (9-2-1 overall, 5-1-0 league) a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with his team-leading eighth goal this year. The Dutchmen (8-4-2, 2-3-1) knotted the score at 1-1 in the 31st minute when a Hamilton defender accidentally kicked the ball into his own net after Josh Butler '07 (Cazenovia, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) sent the ball towards the goal on a restart.

Rob Kramer (Westport, NY/Staples) made nine saves for Union. Trevor Clarkson and Mark Garcia combined to stop just one shot for the Continentals.

This clash of regionally ranked teams had an impact on the league postseason picture. The Continentals, ranked ninth in the Northeast region and winners of four straight games, are in second place and just one point behind league leader Hobart College with one game remaining. The seventh-ranked Dutchmen dropped out of a tie with St. Lawrence and into fifth place. The top four teams qualify for the league championships tournament.

Union travels to Hobart for its league finale Saturday.
