SCHENECTADY, NY -- A goal 17:19 into the first period by senior Emily French (North Andover, MA/Brooks School) held up and Union posted a 1-0 Liberty League field hockey triumph over the University of Rochester Friday at Frank Bailey Field.
Union is now 9-5 on the season, and 3-3 in league play, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 10-5 overall and also 3-3 in the Liberty League. The Dutchwomen are winners of seven of their last eight contests, while Rochester had a six-game winning streak snapped. The teams are tied for fifth place in the league.
French scored her second goal in as many games when she converted a rebound off a corner in the unassisted tally. The Yellow Jackets had their opportunities, including at 38:58 when Christi Bottcher (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton Area) had a penalty stroke stopped by Union netminder Liz Stanford (Acton,MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional).
With 2:20 left in the second half, Lara Bucarey (Blairstown, NJ/Blair Academy) had a breakaway but three Union defenders caught up and thwarted the threat. Finallly, with just two seconds remaining, Rochester's Mary DiMatteo (Belmont, NY/Belmont) had a shot directly in front of the net sail just wide left.
Stanford made six saves for the Dutchwomen, while Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) made three saves for the visitors. Union had a 14-13 shot edge and 13-9 advantage in corners.
Saturday, the Dutchwomen host Wiliam Smith (now 5-1 in league after losing at Skidmore Friday). Game time is 2 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
