SCHENECTADY, NY -- Two second half goals were not enough for the Union field hockey team as the Dutchwomen lost at Bailey Field to William Smith, 3-2 Saturday. Union fell to 9-6 on the season and finishes Liberty League play with a 3-4 record. The Herons improved to 6-1 in the league and 13-3 overall.
Union spotted William Smith a 3-0 halftime lead, but at 54:54, Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) scored on an unassisted tally, her team leading 15th goal of the season. Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT/Hartford) scored with 56 seconds left in regulation for the Dutchwomen.
Brooke Atwood (Marathon, NY/Marathon) opened the scoring for the Herons at 5:57, and Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville, NY/Harpursville) made it 2-0 over 10 minutes later. William Smith took a 3-0 lead with 8:35 remaining in the first half on a goal by Sarah Palmer (Baltimore, MD/Friends School).
Liz Stanford (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) made 12 saves for the Dutchwomen while Katie DeKraker (Westport, CT/Staples) stopped six. William Smith outshot the Dutchwomen, 18-14 and had 14 corners to the hosts' 11.
Union will host Castleton Tuesday at 4 p.m. and will wrap up the regular season October 26 at Oneonta.
