SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College field hockey team scored two late first-half goals and another in the second half to defeat Castleton State College, 3-2, in non-conference action at Bailey Field Tuesday afternoon. The game marked the final home game for Union seniors
Emily French (No. Andover, MA/ Brooks School), Hillary Benoit (Sudbury, MA/ Lincoln Sudbury), Elizabeth Livada (Cape Elizabeth, ME/ Cape Elizabeth), Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/ John Burroughs) and
Lauren Foye (Acton, MA/ Acton-Boxboro).
Castleton took an early two-goal lead as Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, VT/ Mt. Abraham) poked in a corner from Trishia Fellows (Hartland, VT/ Hartford) less than four minutes into the game. Fellows followed with a goal at 9:14 as she fired in a rebound past Union goaltender
Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/ Kennebunk).
Union answered back at 19:46 as Trotter netted her team-leading 16th goal of the season, sending home a corner by
Emily Bryson (Charlestown, MA/ Gov. Dummer). French then knotted the game at 2-2 with 21 seconds left in the first half.
Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) found a loose ball amidst a skirmish in front of the net, passed to French, who slipped the ball past Castleton goaltender Trisha Clark (East Dover, VT/ Brattleboro).
Keelin Skurek (Massillon, OH/ Western Reserve Academy) notched the game-winner at 45:34 as she carried the ball up the left from midfield, dodged several defenders, and sent in her shot which crossed into the open right side of the net. The goal marked the rookie's fourth goal of the season.
Wakeland made one save in her fifth win of the season, while Clark made 17 stops for the Spartans. Union outshot Castleton, 30-4, and held a 28-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Dutchwomen are back in action for their final regular-season game on Thursday, October 26th when they travel to Oneonta for a 4:00 p.m. game. The game marked the final of the regular season for Castleton.
