Men's Hockey Falls to Quinnipiac, 8-5

ALBANY, NY – The Union College men's hockey team fell to Quinnipiac, 8-5, in the consolation game of the Governor's Cup Presented by Citizens Bank at the Pepsi Arena Sunday afternoon. Quinnipiac capitalized on four of 12 power play chances, and broke a 5-5 tie late in the third period to overtake the Dutchmen.

Junior Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) and freshman Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, QUE) each scored two goals for the Dutchmen (2-2-2), while T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) added three assists. Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) posted his first multi-point game of the season with two assists, and Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) scored his second goal in as many games.

Coyle, who posted four points in the tournament on three goals and an assist, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Dan Travis put Quinnipiac (3-2-1) on the board midway through the first period on his second power-play goal of the season off passes form Bryan Leitch and captain Reid Cashman.

Coyle notched his first goal of the game on the power play, sending a shot from the right circle past the glove side of Quinnipiac goaltender Bud Fisher, just over five minutes into the second period. Fox set up DiMarzo, whose pass Coyle connected on for the goal.

The Bobcats took a 3-1 lead on two goals just 15 seconds apart, the first coming from John Doherty at the point on the power play at 6:23. Greg Holt netted his first career goal, stripping the puck from a Dutchmen defender and firing past Union goaltender Rich Sillery (Hyattsville, MD).

Cook brought the Dutchmen within one with a shot from the top of the left circle before Quinnipiac's Jamie Bates extended the lead to 4-2 on the power play.

Valery-Trabucco closed out the period with his first goal of the game at 16:09 in the second, jamming in a rebound from the low right of off DiMarzo's initial shot to close the Bobcats' lead to one at 4-3.

Quinnipiac struck again at 1:47 of the third period on a goal by David Marshall, but Union rallied back to knot the game with two goals in three minutes. Valery-Trabucco notched his second of the game at 7:10, as his shot dribbled through Fisher's five-hole. Coyle knotted the game for the second time shooting in a rebound from Jonathan Lareau (Plainville, MA) who had shot from the point. Senior captain Sean Streich (Kimberley, BC) has passed across the point to set up Lareau, as both defenders tallied their first points on the season.

Eric Lampe netted the game-winner at 13:46 of the final period, and the Bobcats tacked on two more in the stanza to ensure the win. Ben Nelson slid a puck past Sillery with three minutes to play, and Michael Bordieri notched an empty-netter with 48 seconds remaining.

Sillery made 26 saves in his first collegiate start. Fisher stopped 20 shots in his third win of the season, extending the Bobcats' unbeaten streak to five games.

Union is back in action on Friday, November 3 when Quinnipiac visits Messa Rink to open up ECACHL play. Face off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
