Women's hockey falls to No. 8 Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. -- Behind seven-point games from Olympians Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.), the No. 8-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team handed an 11-0 defeat to Union College in the Big Green's home opener at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth tallied four goals in the first period, first from Olympian Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.), who ripped a shot from the slot past Union net minder Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, Fla.) 3:36 into the game. Assists on Apps' goal were credited to Parsons and Piper.
Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) notched her first goal of the season, a power-play tally with Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) picking up an assist on Bowman's mark. Just 30 seconds later, Carrie Thompson gave Dartmouth a 3-0 lead with a wrister from senior captain Nicole Ruta (Pickering, Ont.)
In the latter part of the first stanza, Parsons stripped the puck from a Union defender and buried the shot to record her first collegiate goal, and the final tally of the period.
Parsons, who deferred enrollment until this fall to play for the U.S. National Team in the Winter Olympics, netted three more goals in the second period, as Union held the Big Green to just five shots on net in the stanza.
Piper had a hand in all three goals in the third period, netting her first tally of the season just 36 seconds into the period. The senior, who missed last season due to playing for Team Canada in the Winter Olympics, assisted on an Apps power-play tally before netting her second goal of the game at 14:49. Piper then notched the helper on rookie Jenna Cunningham's first career goal.
Dartmouth out-shot the Dutchwomen 41-9, and went 4-for-6 on the power play. Freshman Sarah Kennedy (Jasper, Alta.) recorded her first collegiate start, making nine saves in the shutout. Zirbel made 15 saves in the first period before being replaced by Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN). Hanson stopped 15 shots over the final 40 minutes.
The Dutchwomen are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they face No. 7 Harvard in a 2 p.m. ECACHL game at the Bright Hockey Center.
