Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey streak ends at St. Lawrence, 3-2 in OT

CANTON, NY -- Senior forward Saeger Philpot scored her second goal of the game 2:52 into the second overtime period to lift St. Lawrence University's field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Union College Saturday. The Dutchwomen had won five straight.

St. Lawrence improved to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League, keeping the Saints in the thick of the league playoff race. Union is now 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the league.
The Saints got off to a slow start, but after turning back early Union pressure started to take over offensively. The Saints scored the game's first goal when Joss-Elyse Smith started an offensive flurry with a rush into the Union circle. Patty Ball's shot from a sharp angle was kicked out by Union goalie Liz Stanford (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro), but Philpot pounced on a loose ball in the scramble after the rebound and scored her seventh of the year at 14:27 to give the Saints the lead.

Union tied the game 6:22 into the second half after Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) controlled a long pass right in front of Saint goaltender Lindsey Taylor and tucked the ball past Taylor for her 11th of the year. The Dutchwomen took the lead when Trotter fed freshman Keelin Skurek (Massillon, OH/Western Reserve Academy) while screening Taylor and Skurek scored her third of the season 6:01 later.

The Saints tied the game when Joss-Elyse Smith broke past the defense on the sideline and cut into the middle, feeding senior Ali Mattison who scored her eighth of the year with a shot to the far corner against Union goalie Elise Wakeland with 14:47 to go in regulation.

Neither team scored in the first 15 minute overtime period with Taylor making two saves for the Saints and Wakeland three for Union. Philpot then scored her fourth game winner of the year and her eighth of the season to give the Saints the sweep.

SLU outshot Union 30-20 overall with Liz Stanford making eight first half saves and Wakeland finishing with a total of seven for Union. Taylor had nine saves for the Saints.

The Dutchwomen are idle until October 17, when they play at Hartwick.
