POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Although the Vassar women's soccer team was able to find the back of the net less than three minutes into the game on Saturday at Prentiss Field, a second-half Union goal knotted the game up and the teams battled to a 1-1 tie.
Vassar now stands at 3-5-1, 0-3-1 in Liberty League play. Union is 6-2-3, 3-0-1 in the Liberty League.
In the 2nd minute sophomore Grace Sokolow (Parker, CO/Chaparral) served a corner kick into the box where sophomore Emma Kemp (Albany, CA/Albany) out-jumped a scrum to knock a header past Dutchwomen keeper Mia Simone (Rexford, NY/Academy of the Holy Names). It was Kemp's fifth goal of the season and her second header in the last three games.
Vassar controlled possession much of the first half, notching six shots. Sophomore Nola Solomon (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) nearly gave her team some breathing room with 12:53 to play in the half. Senior Ali Fantl (West Hartford, CT/Hall) blasted a shot on net and Simone bobbled the
ball. Solomon was almost able to knock the ball in, but Simone managed to knock it out of the box.
Sokolow also had an opportunity to give her team a two-goal cushion with 26:22 to play in the game. Freshman Laura Smith (Toledo, OH/Notre Dame Academy) sent a cross to Sokolow, who one-timed a rocket at Simone, but the freshman keeper made an extremely difficult save to keep her team
within striking distance.
Union got on the board with 18:58 left to play. Junior Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional) sent a ball into the box from 40 yards and freshman Amy Block (Stratham, NH/Gov. Dummer Academy) received the pass. Block took a shot that Vassar keeper Lisa Strumwasser (Santa Monica,
CA/Santa Monica) managed to deflect but freshman Allison Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional) cleaned up the rebound to send a shot past Strumwasser.
Solomon and freshman Molley Mackin (NorthBennington, VT/Mt. Greylock) both had good looks at goal in the remaining regulation time, but neither team could net a winning goal. Neither team could find a goal in the two overtime periods as well and both Strumwasser and Simone made some tough
saves to keep the game going.
Strumwasser and Simone had five saves apiece. The Dutchwomen had 13 shots, while the Brewers had 11.
Union hosts Skidmore Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Liberty League play.
