SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, QC) scored two second-period goals as the Union College men's hockey team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over UMass Lowell in non-conference action at Messa Rink Friday evening. The Dutchmen, who have won four-straight at home, picked up their first win over the River Hawks at Messa Rink and improve to 6-7-2 overall on the season. The River Hawks, who are winless in eight games, fall to 3-9-4 overall.
Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) struck first for the Dutchmen at 15:50 of the first period as he tipped a shot from Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, AB) between his legs on the power play for his fifth goal of the season. Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) sent a pass from the low circle to Caffaro at the point. The defender snapped a shot through traffic, finding Coyle's stick just in front of the crease. Union outshot UMass Lowell, 15-4, in the first period.
Valery-Trabucco gave the Dutchmen a 2-0 advantage just over two minutes into the second frame when his shot from inside the left circle sailed through a screen past UMass Lowell goaltender Carter Hutton on the far side.
The River Hawks took advantage of four Union penalties in the second period to gain momentum, while outshooting their hosts, 10-4, in the stanza. UMass Lowell converted on the power play at 13:46 when defenseman Cleve Kinley's one-timer from the top of the left circle careened past Union goaltender Justin Mrazek's (Regina, SK) glove side. Kinley connected on a pass from Chris Auger on the play.
Valery-Trabucco answered back less than four minutes later to give the Dutchmen a two-goal lead headed into the second intermission when he roofed the puck from a low angle with Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QC) and Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) assisting. With the point, Bouchard moves into a tie for 10th place with John Sicinski on Union's Division I scoring leaders with 76 career points.
The River Hawks outshot the Dutchmen 14-1 in the third period until Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) netted a rebound from Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) at 13:14 to give Union a 4-1 lead. Potts' shot bounced off Hutton's pads, and Walters, who was skating back around the net, poked the puck back in front off of Hutton's skate and dribbling over the line for the rookie's fourth goal of the season.
Kory Falite sparked a comeback, lighting the lamp twice late in the third, as the River Hawks held a 19-5 shot advantage in the final period. The freshman picked up his fifth goal of the season at 14:12, and followed by flipping in a rebound from a Nick Schaus shot with less than three minutes remaining to cut Union's lead to 4-3.
The Dutchmen held the River Hawks without a shot after Falite's second goal, despite the extra attacker for almost a minute at the end of the game.
Mrazek made 30 saves in the win, while Hutton stopped 20 Dutchmen shots.
Union returns to action on Sunday when the Dutchmen travel to UConn for a 3:05 non-conference game.
