Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Balanced offense leads Dutchmen past RPI, 5-1

BURLINGTON, VT – A balanced offensive attack by the Union College men's hockey team helped down Rensselaer, 5-1, in the consolation game of the Sheraton/TD Banknorth Catamount Cup hosted by the University of Vermont Saturday afternoon. The win extends Union's unbeaten streak against the Engineers to six games, and marks the first win over the cross-town rivals at a neutral site since 1996.
Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) put Union on the board at 8:47 of the first. Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, AB) cleared the puck up the left side to T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY). Fox and Delforte rushed in as Fox took a shot from the left circle. Delforte collected the rebound and sent his shot past Rensselaer netminder Jordan Alford.
Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) picked up his first career short-handed goal with an impossible angle shot at 15:21 of the first. The freshman thwarted a Rensselaer breakout attempt and shot the puck from behind the goal line, hitting Alford's shoulder and falling into the net.
Caffaro lit the lamp on a five-on-three power play just over four minutes into the second period for his eighth power-play point of the season. Walters passed behind the net to Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH), who sent the pass back up to Caffaro whose slapshot from the high slot fluttered past Alford's glove side.
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) extended the Dutchmen's lead to 4-0 at 15:36 of the middle stanza with a hard shot from the slot that slid through Alford's five-hole. Michael Beynon (Nepean, ON) broke the puck out to Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ), who passed up to Cook as he crossed the blue line.
The Engineers came out hard in the final frame, holding the Dutchmen without a shot until midway through the period and outshooting them, 10-5 in the period. Jonathan Ornelas put Rensselaer on the board at 6:54 of the third when he tipped in a shot from Peter Merth on the power play.
Coyle added an insurance goal at 15:11 of the third off a long pass from Cook. Cook was named to the All-Tournament team with two goals and an assist in the tournament. Also named to the team were tournament MVP Nate Dey and Casey Borer of St. Cloud, Joe Fallon and Corey Carlson of Vermont, and Peter Merth of RPI.
Justin Mrazek (Regina, SK) made 21 saves in his seventh win of the season, while Alford stopped 21 Dutchmen shots and falls to 3-3-2 on the season.
Union returns to ECAC Hockey League action on January 5 and 6 when the Dutchmen host Dartmouth and Harvard. Union faces off with the Big Green at 7 p.m. Friday and will take on the Crimson at 7 p.m. Saturday.
