PRINCETON, NJ – Union battled back from a two-goal deficit late in the third period, but Princeton sophomore Brandan Kushniruk gave the Tigers the win, 4-3, in overtime in ECAC Hockey League action at at Hobey Baker Rink Friday night.
Kushniruk poked home a pass from the corner from Lee Jubinville with 2:08 left to play in overtime to give the Tigers their first win over the Dutchmen at Hobey Baker Rink in seven tries.
Freshman
Jason Walters (Renfrew, ONT) picked up a goal and an assist in the game, and
Jason Shaffer (Arvada, CO) picked up his first career tally with the equalizer late in the third period.
Walters sparked the Union offensive attack in the third period with a power-play goal at 12:40. Walters was set at the blue line on the power-play and sent a pass from
Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) into traffic and off a Princeton defender to cut the Tigers' lead to one at 3-2.
Freshman
Jason Shaffer (Arvada, CO) knotted the game at 13:15 as he flipped in a rebound of
Torren Delforte's (Shortsville, NY) shot.
Sam Bowles (Davidsonville, MD) picked up the second assist for his first point on the season.
Grant Goeckner-Zeller put the Tigers (4-7-2, 3-5-1 ECACHL) on the board just over four minutes into the game with a low stick-side breakaway goal after picking up a Union turnover at the blue line.
Union (5-6-2, 1-4-0 ECACHL) came back 43 seconds later as
Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) slid in the puck for his first goal in four games.
Jason Walters' (Renfrew, Ontario) slapshot bounced off of Princeton goaltender Zane Kalemba's left leg and onto the stick of
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ). Cook sent a pass across the crease to Potts, who pushed the puck into the open right side of the net.
Princeton carried a 3-1 lead headed into the second intermission with a pair of power-play goals in the latter half of the period. Mike Moore scored on a shot from the point at 8:24, and Brett Wilson followed with a low rebound in the slot at 13:47.
Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) made 32 saves in the game, including 14 in the first period, while Kalemba stopped 33 for the Tigers.
Union faces Quinnipiac for the third time this season Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Northford Ice Pavillion.
