Colgate skates past Union 6-1

Josie McDermott scored her first collegiate goal against the Raiders

Hamilton, N.Y. – Union fell victim to a tough Colgate offense, falling 6-1 at Starr Rink. The Raiders were led by Allison Paiano who had four points with a hat trick and one assist. Freshman Josie McDermott(Unadilla, NY) scored on the power play to represent the lone Dutchwomen goal. It was the 11th straight loss for Union as they fell to 3-22-1 overall and 0-18-0 in the ECACHL.

The line of Ashley Bradford, Paiano, and Becky Irvine proved to be potent for the Raiders as they scored four goals and added five assists for nine points.

Carly McNaughton won a face off low in the offensive end and drew the puck back. Kara Leene, who was coming across the center of the circle, picked up the puck and headed towards the goal where she went top shelf over goaltender Amanda Hanson's (Brainerd, MN) glove hand at 9:16 of the first period for the first tally.

Colgate came back with a shorthanded goal from Paiano less than three minutes later at 12:06. After a neutral zone turnover by Union's power-play unit, Irvine recovered the puck and dropped it to Tara French who then sent a cross-ice pass to Paiano. Paiano carried the puck in from the left side where she was wide open and flipped the puck past the glove of Hanson.

Bradford put Colgate up 3-0 when she tipped in a Clancy Todd shot from the point at 16:09 of the second period.

Just over two minutes later, Irvine won a draw at the circle, sending the puck straight back to Paiano who went five-hole on Hanson.

The Raiders added two goals within the first ten minutes of the third period to make it 6-0. Irvine sent the puck to the point to Kiira Dosdall who released a slap shot that went just wide of the net. The puck bounced behind the net and back out to Paiano on the left post where she placed it in the wide open net at 2:52.

Sam Hunt scored Colgate's second power-play goal at 7:51 when she came from behind the net, went around her defender, and went stick side on Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL) who replaced Hanson for the final period.

The Dutchwomen were able to spoil Brook Wheeler's chance for a shutout, when McDermott scored her first collegiate goal on a wraparound shot at 16:02. Junior Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) had the puck in the corner and sent it behind the net to McDermott who skated around and sent the puck between the legs of Wheeler.

Wheeler finished the net with 13 saves. Hanson made 23 saves playing in the first 40 minutes and Zirbel made seven in the final 20 minutes for Union.

The Dutchwomen close out the season in the series finale against the Raiders tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
