Women's Ice hockey loses season finale at Colgate

Dana Smullyan made 13 saves in her final collegiate appearance
Hamilton, N.Y. – Union (3-24-1, 0-20-0 ECACHL) endured another tough offensive attack on the road in a 9-0 loss at Colgate (12-13-7, 9-8-3 ECACHL) in the season finale. The Dutchwomen trailed by just one goal after the first period, but the Raiders scored six in the second on their way to the win. The Raiders were led by Kara Leene who scored four goals of her own. Sam Hunt supported her teammates' efforts with a goal and three assists. The Dutchwomen utilized all three of their goaltenders. Senior Dana Smullyan (Salisbury, CT) got the start and finished with 13 saves in her final collegiate game.
Allison Paiano, who had a hat trick yesterday for Colgate, started the scoring at 17:28 of the first period on the power play. After some hard forechecking in the corner, Tara French won the puck and sent it to Paiano who was behind the net. Paiano skated in and slid the puck behind the goal line at 17:28 of the first.  French was credited with an assist on the play.
Union held the Raiders off the scoreboard for the rest of the first period to enter the second stanza just one goal down.  However, Colgate's offense exploded in the middle period to the tune of six goals, four of which came in a minute and twenty-two second span.
Leene kick-started the hosts' offense when she picked up the puck and cut across the slot and went glove side at 3:59 of the second. She added her second mark one minute and six seconds later at 5:01 on the power-play with help from Hunt, giving Colgate a 3-0 lead.
Eleven seconds after the ensuing face off, Mallory Johnston forechecked a Union player behind the net, disrupting a Union break out. She tipped the puck to Becky Irvine in front of the net, where Irvine snuck a low shot to the back of the net at 5:12.
The blitzkrieg continued nine seconds later when Hunt won the puck and hit Ashley Bradford ahead, who proceeded to streak down the ice and sent a centering pass to Ruth Fish, who was just outside the paint.  Fish deposited Colgate's fifth goal at 5:21.
The final two marks of the middle period came short-handed. Leene got the first at 15:09 followed by a tally by Hunt at 18:05.  The Raiders added two more in the third period for the final 9-0 score. French and Leene both managed another goal at 8:52 and 10:13, respectively.
Melanie Barclay went the distance in net for Colgate, posting her first career shutout while making nine saves.  Union tested all three of its goaltenders. Smullyan suffered the loss. Freshman Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL) replaced her early in the second period but played just 20 seconds before Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) relieved her. Hanson played the final 34:39, making 16 saves and allowing four goals.
Union was out shot 38-9 by Colgate and finished 0-for-8 on the power play.  The Raiders connected on three of their five power play opportunities.
