SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior forward Chris Poey (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) capped off a big weekend by scoring the eventual game-winner late in the second half to lead Union to a 2-0 men's soccer win over SUNY New Paltz Sunday at College Park. Poey had four goals in the two weekend games in the Union Classic and the Dutchmen are now 4-0 on the season.
The teams battled to a scoreless first half, but Poey broke the ice with a point blank shot at 67:23 past Hawks keeper Masanori Hotta (Kawanishi, Japan). The tally at 67:23 was set up from a left side feed from freshman midfielder Ryan Banagan (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem Central).
Banagan added insurance as the newcomer continued his impressive season. He stripped Hotta from 18 yards out and made it 2-0 with a shot at 80:42.
New Paltz (2-3) had an 18-10 shot advantage while the Dutchmen had a 7-6 advantage in corners. Harris Fendell (Short Hills, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) made four saves in the shutout while Hotta stopped three Dutchmen shots.
Union continues a stretch of four straight home games Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Dutchmen host Worcester State. Saturday, Union will take on Salem State at 6 p.m.
