SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College field hockey team got back on track with a 1-0 overtime win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute in non-conference action at College Park Field Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improve to 2-2, while WPI falls to 5-1 with its first loss on the season.
Union freshman Alison Krywanczyk (Essex Junction, VT/ Rice Memorial) knocked in the game-winner just 24 seconds into overtime as she collected a pass from senior captain Hillary Benoit (Sudbury, MA/ Lincoln Sudbury) and sent the ball into the open left side of the net.
Union goaltender Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/ Kennebunk) made five saves for her first shutout of the season. WPI netminder Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT/ The Kent School) stopped one shot in the loss.
Union held a 4-3 shot advantage through the first half, but WPI came out firing in the second half, outshooting the Dutchwomen, 5-2. Sophomore Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA/ St. Peter-Marian) led WPI with four shots, three of which were on net.
The Dutchwomen are back in action on Wednesday, September 20, when they host Utica for a 4 p.m. game at Frank Bailey Field. WPI hosts Worcester State on Tuesday, September 19, for a 4:30 p.m. game.
