SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Katie Kutis (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Utica to a 4-1 field hockey victory over Union at Frank Bailey Field Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers improved to 4-3 while the Dutchwomen fell to 2-3 on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Wright (Franklin, VT/Missisquoi) made 10 saves for the Pioneers, who won despite being outshot, 21-18 on the day. Laurie Calvasina (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) opened the scoring for Utica at 15:59 off a pass from the left side from Elizabeth Knudsen (Rome, NY/RFA). It was the only goal of the first half.
Kutus made it 2-0 when she tucked in a shot while open on the right corner of the Union net at 51:53. The Dutchwomen got on the board moments later, as
Emily Bryson (Charlestown, MA/Gov. Dummer) put home a rebound for her first goal of the year at 52:42.
Utica got insurance goals from Sheena Stivers (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Kutus. Stivers got a feed from Kutus at 58:52 and Kutus wrapped up the scoring with her second of the day at 69:22, assisted by Calvasina.
Liz Stanford (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) made five saves in the first half of play in the Union nets, while
Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/Kennebunk) stopped five in the second half. The Dutchwomen had a 16-8 advantage in corners.
Union will continue a busy week with Liberty League road games Friday at Rensselaer (6 p.m.) and Saturday at Vassar (2 p.m.). Utica will host Nazareth on September 24 at 2 p.m.
