SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season to Salem State, 3-1, Saturday evening in non-conference action at College Park Field. The Dutchmen are now 5-1, while the Vikings improve to 3-2.
Salem State got on the board early in the first half when Jared Barbosa's (Lowell, MA) high arcing shot from about 18 yards out sailed in just out of reach of Union goaltender Harris Fendell (Short Hills, NJ/ St. Benedict's Prep).
Union tied the game less than six minutes later when freshman Ryan Banagan (Albany, NY/ Bethlehem Central) redirected in a cross from Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY/ Canisius High).
The Vikings' game-winner came from a Dutchmen own goal in the 38th minute. Salem State added an insurance goal in the 68th minute when Nick Rice wrestled the ball from Dutchmen goaltender Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/ Staples) and shot into the open net.
Kramer, who replaced Fendell at the start of the second half, made one save for the Dutchmen. Salem State goaltender Pawel Brzyczy (Krakow, Poland) made five saves in the win.
Union held an advantage in both corner kicks (9-3) and shots (13-6) in the game, which featured nine yellow cards and one ejection.
The Dutchmen open Liberty League play at Clarkson on Friday, September 22. Salem State hosts UMass Dartmouth on September 20 at 7 p.m.
