Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey falls at Rensselaer in league opener

TROY, NY – Sophomore Kerri Clark (Saratoga Spring, NY/Saratoga) tallied two goals, including the eventual game-winner to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over area-rival Union in Liberty League action.  With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 3-4 overall and are now 1-0 in Liberty League play. The Dutchwomen fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Clark got the Red Hawks on the board at the 10:43 mark, deflecting a Michelle Roy (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) shot into the net past Union goalie Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/Kennebunk) for the 1-0 lead.  Rensselaer freshman Margaret Chowaniec (Burlington, CT/Lewis Mills) made it a 2-0 at 26:53, after finding the ball amidst a sea of players and putting it in the net.  Sophomore Kristiina Baker (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional) rounded out the first half scoring, tallying a goal with less than three minutes remaining.

In the second half, Clark notched her second goal of the game, and third of the season after converting a pass from Baker at 43:03.  Sophomore Sara Sylinski (Southington, CT/Southington) sealed the victory for the Red Hawks in the 62nd minute, scoring to the left of goalie Liz Stanford (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro), who made two saves in relief of Wakeland.

Senior goalie Liz Szewczak (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi) made two saves in the win for RPI, while Wakeland and Stanford  combined for five saves in defeat.

Union heads to Vassar for a match against the Brewers Saturday (2 p.m.) in another Liberty League contest.
