Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY/Smithtown) had 19 points and also had seven boards as Union defeated Hobart, 85-72 in Liberty League men's basketball action Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center.
The Dutchmen shot 53% for the night and improved to 4-1 in the league (7-8 overall), while the Statesmen fell to 6-10 and 2-3 in the league. Hobart shot 57% in this game, including 71% in the first half, but had 14 turnovers at halftime and 26 for the day. The Dutchmen also made 10 of 13 three point attempts (77%).
Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored 16 points and
Joey Lokitis (Norton, MA/Phillips Academy) put in 12 and joined Desmarais with four steals for the Dutchmen. John Grazioli (Melville, NY/St. Anthony's) led all payers with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the double double, while also blocking three shots, and Aasim Cunningham (Montclair, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) scored 18 while making seven of eight shots from the floor. Mike Manning (Mastic, NY/Center Moriches) scored 15 and had four steals.
Union led 39-38 at the half, and after the game was tied for the first time at 43-43 with 17:36 left in the second, the Dutchmen went on a 14-4 run in the next 7:24 for a 57-47 advantage. The Statesmen never got closer then six the rest of the way.
The Dutchmen are idle until Friday for a league game at Clarkson at 8 p.m.
