CANTON, NY -- Union's five game winning streak snapped as the women's basketball team lost to league leader St. Lawrence, 80-58 at Burkman Gymnasium Saturday. The Dutchwomen fell to 8-8 overall and 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the Liberty League, while the Saints, winners of 16 straight, are 16-1 and 6-0 in the league.
Union put three players in double figures as Devon Ciliberto (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) led the way for Union with 16 points and seven rebounds. Krystal Hammond (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds while Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Maginn) collected 10 points.
The Saints shot 65 percent (12-of-23) from behind the arc in the second half and 44 percent (29-of-65) from the field on the game. Senior point guard Brittany Gaetano led the shooting charge for the Saints, knocking down seven-of-nine-shots from downtown. Scoring a game-high 25 points, Gaetano hit nine-of-12 shots on the afternoon.
Union hung with the Saints early in the first half, trailing only 25-21 with five minutes left to go in the first period as the Dutchwomen rattled off eight straight points to tighten the Saints margin. The Saints however, ended the half on an 11-1 run, capped off by a lay-up at the buzzer by junior guard Kimberly Sikule. Sikule grabbed an offensive rebound and took it up strong for the basket that made the halftime score 36-22.
Out of the locker room, the Saints widened their cushion to 54-40 with 11:15 left in the half. Behind Gaetano's shooting display, Wolff poured in 11 points and six assists for the Saints, including three three-pointers. In the post, the Saints continued to play strong as senior forward Andrea Muszynski posted 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Katie Palmer collected a double-digit game with ten points and four assists.
Union hosts Liberty League rival Skidmore Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
