SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman
Chris Chiodo (Scarsdale, NY) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the 7
th-ranked Union College men's soccer team to a 12-0 win over Southern Vermont Wednesday afternoon at College Park Field. Thirteen players registered points for the 10-2 Dutchmen.
John Manna (Acton, MA) connected with
Damond Heath (Catskill, NY) to start the scoring with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. Manna collected a pass from Heath from the front of the net, took time to set and then fired past Southern Vermont goaltender Elias Skiff (Durham, NY) in the sixth minute for his first career tally. Manna then one-timed a cross from Heath to put the Dutchmen up, 2-0. Manna finished the day with a career-high three goals.
Chiodo accepted a pass up from
Peter Kennedy (Needham, MA) and sprinted past defenders to give Union a 3-0 lead in the 26
th minute.
Less than two minutes later,
Kyle Riter (Rochester, NY) carried the ball up, splitting the defenders before collecting his first career goal.
Chiodo scored again in the 41
st minute after connecting with a cross from
Keita Minakawa (Hillsdale, NJ). The point marks the first in his career for Minakawa. Chiodo added two goals and an assist in the second frame.
Southern Vermont threatened in the 44
th minute when Brandon Dean (Petersburgh, NY) launched a free kick from 30 yards out that sailed directly into the arms of Union netminder
Harris Fendell (Short Hills, NJ). The ball bounced out of his hands and briefly bobbled between Fendell and Southern Vermont's Greg Colehamer (Sandgate, VT), but Fendell regained control, ending the threat.
Paul Angelo (Albany, NY) netted his second goal of the season in the 50
th minute, one-timing a rebound from an initial shot by
Nicky Hoberman (Westport, CT).
Brendan Steiner (Madison, CT) chipped the ball over the defense to sophomore
Jack Scott (Huntington, NY), who carried it the rest of the way for his first career goal in the 59
th minute.
Peter Vucich (Vail, CO) and
Tyler Izykowski (Clifton Park, NY) also added second-half goals, with Izykowski's marking the first of his career.
Fendell made two saves in the first half before giving way to freshman
Ryan Green (Santa Barbara, CA), who made one save in the final 45 minutes. Skiff stopped 22 Union shots in the loss.
Union outshot Southern Vermont, 52-3, and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Dutchmen are back in action on Saturday, October 13 at Skidmore in a 2 p.m. Liberty League game. Southern Vermont hosts Briarcliffe College Saturday at 1 p.m.
