Women's hockey falls at Vermont, 4-1

Courtney Kerslake

BURLINGTON, VT -- Saleah Morrison (Selkirk, MB) had a goal and two assists to lead a balanced attack as Vermont topped Union, 4-1, in women's college hockey Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts have won four straight to open the 2007-08 campaign, the program's best start ever, after winning only three games in each of the past two seasons.

The Dutchwomen (0-4-0) got on the board at 10:24 of the third period with Courtney Kerslake (Sarnia, ON) scoring on an assist from Linnea Edwardson (Duluth, MN). The goal marks the first on the season for the Dutchwomen, and the first in Kerslake's career.

Vermont's special teams were solid scoring twice on the power play in four attempts and adding a shorthanded goal while killing all seven Union extra-player opportunities.

The Catamounts dominated the action in the first period with the first 11 shots on goal for both teams, The last shot was a goal by Stephanie Tewksbury (Marshfield, MA), her second in as many games, to open the scoring at 18:04. Midway through the second stanza, Chelsea Furlani (Colchester, VT) created a turnover while killing a penalty and rapped one home from the goal mouth to make it 2-0 at the second intermission.

In the third, Karen Sentoff (Liverpool, NY) fired in a rebound of a Morrison shot on the power play to make it 3-0. On another power play, Morrison's low drive from the point through traffic eluded Union goalie Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) for her second of the season. UVM out shot the Dutchwomen, 30-10, on the afternoon as Day finished with 26 saves. Vermont's Kristen Olychuck (Kelowna, BC) made nine stops in recording her fourth victory of the season.

The Dutchwomen travel to Wayne State for a pair of games on October 19 and 20 before opening ECAC Hockey play against Brown and Yale at Messa Rink on October 26 and 27.
