McLean leads Union to 2-1 win over Vassar; women's soccer clinches third for Liberty League tourney

SCHENECTADY, NY -  Freshman Katie McLean (Newton, MA) scored her 13th goal of the season and assisted on another as the 17th ranked Union College Dutchwomen downed Vassar College 2-1, in Liberty League play at College Park Field.  The win lifted Union to an overall record of 13-3-0 and a 4-2-0 record in Liberty League play.  The loss brought Vassar to 9-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Liberty League. With the victory, Union clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming Liberty League post-season tournament that will be held at either Hamilton or Wiliam Smith.

Vassar got off to a strong start as forward Sarah Strange (Cypress, TX) deposited her fifth goal of the season just six minutes into the game.  Nola Solomon (Washington, DC) had the ball down  the left sideline and centered it to Strange, who headed it into the back of the net.

Union took control from there. The Dutchwomen had two chances early, as a rocket off of the foot of Stephanie Cannuli (Howell, NJ) hit the crossbar in the first minute of the game. In the 18th minute another strong shot from junior Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT) was just wide. McLean put the Dutchwomen on the board in the 26th minute. She found an opening and dribbled to the middle of the field before firing a perfect shot in the upper left-hand corner of the net.

Union went up 2-1 in the 37th minute when a shot by Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) was saved and junior Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY) picked up the rebound for her fifth of the year.

Union keeper Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, MA) made three saves for the Dutchwomen in getting her 13th win of the season.  Vassar goalkeeper Anne Hutchinson (Tampa, Fl) made seven saves in the loss.

Union will be back in action Sunday at 2:00 PM for the final regular season home game, against RPI  at College Park Field.  Vassar will continue Liberty League action Sunday against Skidmore.
