Women's soccer wraps up league play with 3-0 win over RPI

SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union women's soccer team, ranked #17 in the latest national poll, shutout RPI 3-0 Sunday to close out Liberty League play for the 2007 season. The Dutchwomen, who close out the regular season at Geneseo on October 27, improve to 14-3 overall and finish 6-2 in the league. The Red Hawks fell to 6-9-1 overall and 1-6 in the Liberty League.
The Dutchwomen have now won 14 games for nine straight years.

Junior midfielder Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT) assisted on two of the Union goals on Senior Day, the final home game of the 2007 regular season for the Dutchwomen. Senior midfielder Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) scored the first goal of the day when she took a cross pass from the left of the net from her sister, Allison Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) and deposited her fifth of the season at 38:45.

Hargis set up Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT) at 50:12, as Brown deked one defender and shot low to the right of the keeper for her sixth goal of the fall. Hargis' second assist came when her corner was headed in by Sara Wilson (Wilbraham, MA) at 77:52. It was the fifth of the year for Wilson.

Allison Cuozzo had successive headers that both went high over the Red Hawk cage, with 26:25 and 25:49 remaining in the first half. Caitlin Cuozzo also had a solid opportunity with 9:25 left in the first half but her shot from five yards out was stopped by RPI defender Ariel Hubert (Newport, NH).

Freshman goalkeeper Meghan White (Kingston, NY) made six saves in the nets for RPI, while Union starter Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, MA) made two stops in nearly 77 minutes of play. Sophomore keeper Mia Simone (Rexford, NY) came in to see action and made a save in just over 13 minutes. Union had  a 22-4 shot advantage, including 16-1 in the first half, and had a 5-1 advantage in corners. Fouls on the day featured six by the Dutchwomen and three by the Red Hawks.

Other Union seniors honored prior to the contest were midfielder Stephanie Canulli (Howell, NJ), defender Bridget Duffy (Albany, NY) and midfielder Cristin Tenety (West Islip, NY).
Union is the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament that will take place November 2-3 and the Geneseo contest is the last tuneup for the tourney. RPI plays at Rochester on Tuesday.
