Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer extends unbeaten streak with 3-0 win at Utica

UTICA, NY- The Union College men's soccer team extended its shutout streak to three games with a 3-0 win at Utica College in non-conference action Wednesday on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Senior Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY) led the Dutchmen with a goal and an assist. The Dutchmen, unbeaten in the last six games, improve to 11-2-3 and 3-1-3 in the Liberty League.
Both defenses stood strong in the first half as the two clubs entered the first intermission tied up at 0-0.  Union out shot the Pioneers 6-3 overall in the first half, but Utica held a 2-1 shots on goal advantage.  Each team earned one corner kick in the first half.

The Dutchmen struck first after Ryan Banagan (Albany, NY) earned a break away opportunity and was taken down by UC goalie Kevin Murphy (West Islip, NY) in the goalie box resulting in a penalty kick. Pietrak netted his team-high 12th goal of the season when he knocked home the penalty kick at 50:16.

Union took a 2-0 lead when Pietrak crossed a ball to freshman defender Nicky Hoberman (Westport, CT), who one-timed it home for the Dutchmen in the 63rd minute.  The goal marked the first of his collegiate career.

Union added an insurance goal with 13:36 left in the contest when Paul Angelo (Albany, NY) found Jack Scott (Huntington, NY) charging the net.  Scott chipped a shot over Murphy and chased the ball down before heading it into the back of the net.  Scott, a sophomore forward, tallied his second goal of the season, while his classmate, Angelo, recorded his first assist of the season.

On the day Union out shot Utica 16-3 and earned an 8-2 shots on goal advantage.  Each team tallied two corner kicks on the day.

Murphy stopped five shots in net for the Pioneers, while his counterpart, Rob Kramer (Westpot, CT), made two saves in just over 85 minutes of action.  Kramer earned Liberty League and ECAC Division III Upstate Defensive Player of the Week status last week.

Union travels to Oswego State on Saturday to take on Oswego in their final regular season contest.
