NEW YORK, NY -- The Union women's volleyball team is now 24-9 after splitting two matches Saturday at the New York State Women's Collegiate Atheltic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament at New York University. The Dutchwomen opened the day with a three game sweep over Hartwick but the lost in three games Saturday night to Nazareth.
In the Hartwick match, Union downed the Hawks by scores of 30-28, 30-25 and 30-14. Union was led by Erika Van Valkenburg (Cicero, NY), who had 18 kills, while Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) posted 34 assists and Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) recorded 23 digs.
Saturday night, Nazareth, seeded second in the 12 team tourney, defeated #7 seed Union by scores of 30-21, 30-17 and 30-17. Mynders had 15 digs and Merinder dished out 23 assists. Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) had 14 kills and Rachel Ornsby (Charlton, NY) finished with five kills, seven digs and four blocks for the Dutchwomen.
Union will face Skidmore for the third time this season, Sunday at 12 p.m. in the NYSWCAA tournament. The Throughbreds have defeated the Dutchwomen in two previous meetings this season.
