GENEVA, NY -- Kaitlyn Hamilton scored just 1:15 into overtime to lift William Smith to a 2-1 overtime home victory over Union in a key Liberty League field hockey contest Friday. The Herons remain undefeated in league play (4-0, 9-1 overall) while the Dutchwomen fell to 2-2 in the league and 8-3 overall. It ended a seven game winning streak for Union, which has lost all three games by one goal each, and two in overtime.
With 49 seconds gone in the overtime session, Kelsey Landahl set up for a penalty corner. Britney Paye took the corner and passed to Hamilton, who notched her 12th goal of the season to provide the winning margin.
The Herons opened the scoring at 16:02 of the first half, as Brittany Furlong tallied her seventh of the season. The Dutchwomen tied it late when junior midfielder Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA) scored her sixth of the 2007 season at 33:09. It came after a flurry in front and consecutive shots by Allie Ryan (Westborough, MA) and Keelin Skurek (Massillon, OH) were stopped by Herons goaltender Katie DeKraker. The teams were scoreless in the second half.
Union junior goalkeeper Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) made 15 saves in the nets for the guests, while DeKraker made six stops. William Smith had a 27-8 shot advantage on the day and also had an advantage in corners, 14-8.
The Dutchwomen play at league rival Rochester Saturday at 2 p.m.
