MIDDLEBURY, VT – Rookie Ashton Coghlan’s career-high 31 points, including eight three pointers, highlighted Middlebury’s 92-65 win over visiting Union at Pepin Gym. The Panthers (5-1) shot 50% from the floor, while holding the Dutchmen (1-3) to just 35%.
With the Panthers holding a 24-18 advantage with 9:19 remaining in the first half, Coghlan came alive netting the next 14 points for Middlebury, including four consecutive three’s, on a 14-6 run. The Panthers kept the pressure on for the remainder of the half, building a 47-31 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Middlebury pulled away, increasing the lead to as many as 36 points.
Coghlan’s game-high 31, on 10-15 shooting, paced the Panthers, while Mike Walsh netted 13 and Tim Edwards scored 10.
Nick DiMaggio’s (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) 25, including five three pointers, led the Dutchmen, while
Delon McAllister (Irvington, NJ) added 10. The Panthers had a 52-29 rebound advantage in the game.
DiMaggio posted his third most points in a game in his young career. He had a career high 31 vs. Bates at home last season, and later had 26 at RPI last winter.
Union continues non-league action with a game at SUNYIT Monday at 7 p.m.
