Lokitis, DiMaggio lead Dutchmen to 87-79 win at SUNYIT

UNION, NY -- Sophomore guard Joey Lokitis (Norton, MA) scored a career high 27 points and sophomore guard Nick DiMaggio (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) had 21 points to lead Union to an 87-79 men's basketball contest at the SUNY Institute of Technology Monday night.

The Dutchmen snapped a three-game losing streak (2-3) while the Wildcats fell to 2-3.

Lokitis, who had a previous career high of 17 at Vassar in his freshman season, made nine of 13 shots from the floor and all five of his free throws  He hit four of seven three point attempts and also added three assists for the Dutchmen. DiMaggio, who has scored a total of 46 points in the last two games, had three assists and made six of seven from the line along with six rebounds. Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY) alos had six boards for the Dutchmen.

All five starters scored in double figures for SUNYIT, with Dave Golemiowski scored 22 with a game high nine rebounds. Ajani Edwards had 16 and seven assists and Devon Moore dished out six assists.

Union only trailed 43-39 at halftime despite 56% shooting by SUNYIT, which held the Dutchmen to 40% shooting in the half. The game was tied for the eighth and final time at 61-61 with 9:21 remaining in the second half. But the Dutchmen exploded with a 13-3 run in the next 2:03, featuring eight points by Lokitis in the run. The Wildcats pulled to within two at 79-77 with 1:38 left, but the Dutchmen made all eight free throws down the stretch to wrap up the victory.

The Union bench outscored SUNYIT's, 21-6, while the hosts had a slight 35-33 rebounding edge.

Union hosts Southern Vermont at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday, December 8 at 4 p.m.
