SCHENECTADY, NY – The Brown University men's hockey team edged Union, 3-1, in the two teams' regular-season ECAC Hockey League finale at Messa Rink Saturday evening. Brown goaltender Mark Sibbald stopped 29 Union shots in his second win of the season, while
Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) snapped a 15-game scoreless streak with the lone goal for the Dutchmen in the first period.
With the loss, the Dutchmen finish the season in 12th place and will travel to face fifth-seed Quinnipiac in the ECACHL first round, March 2-4, at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, CT.
Brown (10-13-6, 6-12-4 ECACHL) got on board less than three minutes into the opening period as Brian McNary buried a five-on-three power-play goal at 2:39. David Robertson fed the puck to McNary, who was planted low in the left circle, and McNary wristed his shot high past Union netminder
Justin Mrazek (Regina, SK).
Union (14-17-3, 7-14-1 ECACHL) evened the score midway through the first period as Walters redirected a shot from
Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, AB) on the power play.
Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) passed across the point to Caffaro, who skated in to the left circle and fired toward Walters who was screening Sibbald at the post. The shot careened off of Walter's shoulder, and crossed into the net, bouncing off of the far post. With the assist, Caffaro broke a four-game skid without a point.
Robertson netted the eventual game-winner just 46 seconds into the middle frame, when he found a rebound and fired into an open net for his third goal of the season. Sean Muncy collected a pass from Sean Dersch, and shot from below the left circle, but Mrazek kicked the puck the other way in front of the crease as he made the save, sending it right for an unopposed Robertson.
Devin Timberlake added an empty-netter with just over 30 seconds to play to seal the game in favor of the visitors.
Union killed off two five-minute major penalties in the game, holding the Bears to one power-play goal in nine opportunities. The Dutchmen converted one of seven chances, during which they peppered Sibbald with 13 shots.
Mrazek made 31 saves in the game, including 15 while a man down. He falls to 13-16-3 on the season. Sibbald improves to 2-3-2.
