HANOVER, NH – The Dartmouth College men's hockey team used a pair of third-period tallies to edge Union College, 3-2, in ECAC Hockey League action at Thompson Arena Saturday evening. Union had two power-play tallies for the second-straight night as
T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) and
Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) each recorded goals with the man advantage.
Dartmouth (11-9-3, 7-6-3 ECACHL) took a 1-0 first period lead when Union netminder
Justin Mrazek (Regina, SK) made the save on a shot from the left side of the crease by J.T. Wyman, but couldn't cover the puck as it dribbled across the line.
Just 45 seconds into the game, the Big Green's David Jones beat a Union defender to the puck high along the left boards and carried the puck to the net unopposed. Jones' shot hit the left post and slid across the crease under Mrazek before it was cleared by a visiting player at the right post.
Union's best chance of the first frame came when
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) intercepted a pass at center ice and carried it into the Dartmouth zone. He dropped the puck back to
Mike Wakita (Kitimat, BC), whose high shot from the top of the left circle was easily handled by Big Green goaltender Mike Devine.
Delforte evened the score less than five minutes into the second period on the power play with his third goal of the season. Cook connected with
Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, AB) low in the right circle. Caffaro's shot bounced off of Devine's pads out to Delforte, who lifted the puck past the goaltender's stick side.
Rob Pritchard gave Dartmouth a 2-1 lead at 2:31 of the final period when he jammed in a rebound from Connor Shields, and the Big Green took a two-goal lead 10 minutes later on Wyman's second goal of the night. Kevin Swallow got the puck behind the net and found Wyman all alone in the slot at 12:23.
Fox
answered back with a power-play tally at 14:07of the third.
Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, QC) passed down the left boards to
Jeff Christiansen (Elm Grove, WI) below the left circle. Christiansen sent a pass across the slot to Fox, who one-timed it from the right circle for his 12
th goal of the season.
Caffaro kept the game within reach for the Dutchmen (13-13-2, 6-10-0 ECACHL) as the clock wound down, batting at a puck in mid-air as Wyman sent it toward Union's empty net.
Mrazek made 34 saves in the loss, while Devine stopped 22 Dutchmen shots, including 11 in the final period.
The Dutchmen return home for a pair of ECACHL games this weekend. They take on Cornell on Friday, February 9 at 7 p.m. in game which will be televised throughout the Capital District and the Syracuse Region on Time Warner Cable Channel 3.
