Hampden-Sydney, VA – The 15th-ranked Hampden Sydney men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 first-quarter lead en route to a 20-7 victory over Union College Monday afternoon at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-1 overall, while the Dutchmen fall to 1-3 on the season.
Junior
Gordon Burdis (Salt Point, NY/ Millbrook) led the Dutchmen with a pair of goals.
Hampden-Sydney jumped out to an early 6-1 first quarter lead as Thomas Jennings, Kelly Mattie, and Ryan Harrington scored pairs of goals respectively. In the second quarter, Hampden-Sydney continued to produce on offense as the Tigers held a commanding 13-1 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Mathison scored all three of the Tiger goals, while
Jon Miller (Yarmouth, ME/ Yarmouth) scored the lone goal for the Dutchmen.
Union rallied in the final quarter, netting a season-high five goals in the frame. Miller opened the final period with his fifth goal of the season, which Burdis followed with a goal less than three minutes later. Hampden-Sydney answered back, but the Burdis and
Samuel Werner (Bethesda, MD/ Walter Johnson) found the back of the net with goals a minute and a half apart.
Senior Scott Russell
recorded the victory for the Tigers in goal as he made five saves and allowed only one goal in the first half.
Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan) made nine saves in the first three quarters, while
Christopher Keinath (Wilbraham, MA/ Minnechaug Regional) stopped four shots in relief.
The Dutchmen are back in action on Wednesday in a 12:00 pm game against Potsdam at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD.
