TROY, NY – Junior Kevin Donovan's (Hanover, MA) goal just 1:58 into overtime gave Union College a 2-1 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in the first game of the Red Hawk Classic at Harkness Field on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The game was the first of the season for both teams.
Donovan, a defender, charged into the play, took a feed from Ryan Banagan (Albany, NY/Bethlehem) and rolled the ball into the net from just outside the crease for the victory.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by senior Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY). Classmate Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT) earned the assist after passing the ball to Pietrak, who dribbled up the right side and tallied past Chargers goaltender Chris Feltes (Manchester, NH) at 9:01.
Despite being outshot 11-2 in the half, Colby-Sawyer tied the score at 1-1 with less than four minutes remaining. Freshman Corey McKean (Lisbon, NH) scored the goal after catching Dutchmen goalie Rob Kramer (Westport, CT) moving in the opposite direction.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half but neither was able to cash in. Senior Chris Poey (Amherst, MA) nearly gave the Dutchmen a 2-1 advantage with under two minutes remaining, but Feltes made a diving grab outside the box.
Union returns to action on Saturday when it faces Purchase at 3:30pm. The Chargers battle host Rensselaer on Saturday at 1pm.
