Dutchwomen force OT late but lose thriller to #14 Williams, 3-2

SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior forward Sally Cobb (Darien, CT) scored on the doorstep of the Union net with 2:58 remaining in overtime to lift Williams College to a 3-2 OT victory over Union College at Frank Bailey Field Tuesday night. The Dutchwomen fell to 1-1 while Williams, ranked 14th in the NFCA poll, is 2-0.

Cobb took a feed from the left side end line from junior forward Meighan McGowan (Greenwich, CT) for her first goal of the season. Union sent the game into overtime in improbable fashion. Freshman forward Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) notched her first career goal with only one second remaining in regulation. Union junior midfielder Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA) took a desperation shot from 35 yards out through a crowd, and Willey deflected it in from 12 yards out. After some discussion by the officials, the goal stood and the extra session began.

Williams looked to gain the win with 9:46 left in the extra session but a goal was waved off. With 4:50 left in the overtime, the Ephs had a three-on-one from midfield but the lone Union defender, sophomore midfielder Allie Ryan (Wesborough, MA), broke up the threat 20 yards from the Union net.

Union opened the scoring at 21:34 when freshman forward Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) scored the third goal in two games. She was open in front from 12 yards out after a feed from Willey. McGowan tied it for Williams with her second of the year, scoring an unassisted goal with two defenders covering at 34:25. Senior forward Katherine Krieg (Milwaukee, WI) tallied her second of the year with a pass from Cobb at 40:46. Krieg came out of a scramble in front to give the Ephs the 2-1 advantage.

The Ephs outshot the Dutchwomen, 19-9, including 4-1 in overtime, and had a 12-7 advantage in corners. Both goaltenders, sophomore Bethany Baker (Prairie Village, KS) of Williams and junior Liz Stanford (Acton, MA), made six saves in the nets.

Union returns home Friday night for a 6 p.m. contest with Skidmore to open Liberty League play.
