SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior forward Elise Britt (Saratoga Springs, NY) scored the eventual game-winner with 18:41 to play in regulation as Skidmore College opened Liberty League field hockey play with a 2-1 win at Union College Friday night at Frank Bailey Field. The Thoroughbreds are now 4-0 overall while Union is 1-2 (0-1 in the league).
Britt took a pass from freshman midfielder Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, NY) and shot it in from seven yards out for her fifth goal of the season. Union sophomore forward Keelin Skurek (Massillon, OH) had tied the game at 1-1 at 46:27, scoring off a pass from 15 yards out by junior forward Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA). It was Skurek's first tally of the year.
Skidmore opened the scoring just 7:50 into the contest. Senior forward Shailia DeLea (Cornish, ME) knocked in a loose ball through a scramble close in front for her first of the year.
Union junior goaltender Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) made 14 saves, while Skidmore freshman goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, MA) made fives stops in the game. Stanford made nine of her stops in the first half. Skidmore had a 9-3 corner advantage and outshot Union, 20-8, including a 13-5 shot advantage in the first half.
Union plays at WPI Saturday while Skidmore is at Middlebury Tuesday.
