UTICA, NY – The Union College field hockey team handed Utica College a 2-0 loss Wednesday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Dutchwomen broke a five-game losing streak in the series against the Pioneers and improve to 3-2 overall on the season.
The first half proved to be a defensive battle until junior midfielder
Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA) rebounded her own shot off of UC goalie Amanda McDonnell's (Sagamore Beach, MA) kick save and scored her second goal of the season with just 24 seconds left in the half. Union took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Union went up 2-0 after
Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT) took a shot inside the goalie circle that was saved by McDonnell but rebounded and dumped in the net by sophomore forward
Lizzie Moran (Unionville, PA). Moran now has three goals on the year. Hanson with credited with an assist, marking her third of the season.
Union outshot Utica 13-12 and earned a 13-5 penalty corner advantage on the evening. McDonnell made nine stops in net for Utica, while
Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) stopped eight shots for Union.
The Dutchwomen return to Liberty League action Friday against visiting Vassar College at 4 p.m. The Pioneers return to action against host Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday. The Empire 8 contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
