SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman forward
Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) tipped in a goal in the 51
st minute to lift the Union College field hockey team to a 2-1 Liberty League victory over visiting Vassar College Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchwomen improve to 4-2 on the season and with their first conference win, stand at 1-1 in league play. The Brewers fall to 2-4 and 0-1 in Liberty League action.
Jessie Albert (West Hartford, CT) gave Vassar the lead just over five minutes into the game. Catherine Fuller (Chadds Ford, PA) shot the ball after a penalty corner, and Albert connected with her rebound for her first goal of the season.
The momentum shifted in Union's favor when
Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA) picked up a loose ball in a melee in front of the net and knocked it in for the equalizer in the 20
th minute.
The Dutchwomen held control of the first half, including a 13-1 advantage in penalty corners and an 8-4 lead in shots. The second half, however was a more closely-fought battle, with each team registering just three shots.
Union capitalized at 50:48 when freshman
Alexandra King (Chester Springs, PA) launched a shot from outside the arc which ricocheted off Willey's stick high in the arc for the game-winner.
Junior
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ) made two saves in the first half for the Brewers before being relieved by
Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY), who finished with one save. Freshman
Sarah Rios (Queensbury, NY) made two saves in the first 35 minutes, and junior
Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) registered two in the second half.
Union was awarded four penalty corners in the second half to hold a 17-1 lead in the game.
The Dutchwomen continue Liberty League play when they host RPI on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Brewers take on Skidmore in a Liberty League game in Saratoga Springs on Saturday at 2 p.m.
