Women's soccer downs New Paltz, 4-0, to take Red Hawk Classic

TROY, NY – Led by goals from four different players, the Union College women's soccer team defeated SUNY New Paltz, 4-0, to win the 2007 Red Hawks/Dutchwomen Classic on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The Dutchwomen are now 2-0-0 on the season while the Hawks fall to 0-2-0 overall.

The Dutchwomen came out flying in the first half, led by goals from three different scorers.  Junior Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY) got things started at 28:45 after converting a cross by Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/) for the 1-0 lead.

Junior Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT) gave Union a two-goal cushion just under three minutes later when she deflected the ball off her body and into the net off a corner kick by Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT).

Sara Wilson's (Wilbraham, MA) perfectly placed header at the 38:42 mark gave the Dutchwomen a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime.

In the second half, Union continued to dominate, building a four-goal advantage at 57:14 off the foot of senior Stephanie Cannuli (Howell, NY).  On a cross from Caitlin Cuozzo, Cannuli charged through traffic and drove to the net for the goal.

The Dutchwomen, which outshot New Paltz, 27-4, in the game, saw sophomore goaltender Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, MA) post her second consecutive shutout, making four saves.  For New Paltz, junior Sarah Boccard (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) stopped nine shots in the loss.
