Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey holds on to early lead, downs RPI, 3-1

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College field hockey team tallied three first-half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Red Hawks drop to 3-5 overall and stand at 0-2 in league action.

Union dominated the first half, and netted all three goals in the last 15 minutes of the frame. Sophomore Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) sparked the scoring in the 22nd minute by knocking in her own rebound for her fourth goal of the season.

Just over three minutes later, freshman Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) found a loose ball in a scramble in front of the net and sent it in at the far post at 24:16.

As the first half expired, Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT) handled a corner, setting up freshman Alexandra King (Chester Springs, PA) for a shot from just inside the top of the arc. King's shot was saved by RPI goaltender Kate Williams (Rome, NY), but Caroline Tulp (Acton, MA) was there to put in the rebound.

Union held a 14-3 shot advantage in the first half, but RPI came to life in the second stanza, recording eight shots to Union's 10.

RPI put on the pressure late, and had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the 65th minute. Sandy Turnbull (Upperville, VA) shot from 10 yards out, but Union's King streaked across the net to record the defensive save and keep the Red Hawks off the board.

Senior Michelle Clemente (Rensselaer, NY) netted the goal for the Red Hawks in the 66th minute. After gaining control of her own rebound, Clemente's shot rolled past Union netminder Liz Stanford (Acton, MA). Clemente recorded five shots in the second half, with three going on net.

Stanford made five saves for the Dutchwomen while Williams made 15 saves in net for RPI.

Union, which held a 17-10 advantage in penalty corners, hits the road for six straight games, starting with a 4 pm game at New Paltz on Tuesday, September 25. RPI hosts Vassar in a 7 pm Liberty League game on Wednesday, September 26 at Harkness Field.
