Herons down Dutchwomen in top 20 women's soccer matchup

GENEVA, NY -- In a matchup of two of the top 13 ranked women's soccer teams in NCAA Division III, #13 William Smith defeated #5 and previously undefeated Union, 3-0 in a Liberty League game at Cozzens Field Friday.

The Herons improved to 7-0- overall and 1-0 in the league while the Dutchwomen are now 7-1 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League.

Union had allowed just one goal all season but gave up two goals in the first half and another in the final 18 minutes. It was William Smith's first home shutout win over Union since a 1-0 triumph on November 5, 2004 in a Liberty League playoff game.

Megan Stevens opened the scoring with her first goal of the season at 25:53. She lofted a shot from six yards out in front after a cross pass from Brelynn Masypany. Courtney Peters gave the Herons a 2-0 lead at 44:29 with a header from 10 yards out in front of the Union net. She took the feed from the side from Julie Boardman-Brann for her first goal of the year.

Union had a chance to score early in the first half when junior forward Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT) took a shot directly in front of the William Smith net. But Heron goalkeeper Alice Binns made a diving stop to the right after a solid cross to Brown came from sophomore forward Bianca Germain (Albany, NY).

The Dutchwomen, who have outshot opponents 147-53 this season, outshot the Herons, 12-9. Wiliam Smith had a 2-0 advantage in corners. Binns made six saves in the nets while Union sophomore goalkeeper  Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, MA) stopped one William Smith shot.

Union plays at Liberty League foe Hamilton Saturday at 2 p.m.
