Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

McLean, Dutchwomen down Utica, 3-1

SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman Katie McLean (Newton, MA) scored two goals to lead the Union College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Utica College in non-conference action at College Park Field Saturday afternoon. Union snaps a two-game skid and improves to 8-2 (0-2 Liberty League), while Utica's six-game win streak was halted; the Pioneers stand at 6-2 overall and 3-0 in Empire 8 play.

McLean had the first shot of the game in the 16th minute, sending a shot right at Utica goalkeeper Ashley Kaufman (Enfield, CT).

Just over a minute later, McLean took a long pass from Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT) and carried the ball the rest of the way in past defenders, shooting the ball just past Kaufman's extended left arm.

Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY) gave the Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute with her fourth goal of the season. Bordino carried the ball through defenders as she advanced up the right side of the field before crossing the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the net.

McLean registered her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 47th minute on a similar play to her first goal of the game, but this time taking the long pass from senior Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA).

Utica came on stronger in the final 45 minutes, picking up all three shots in the frame. Kristen Vasta (Lenox, MA) sent in a shot from 17 yards out on the right side of the field in the 61st minute, only to see her shot fall directly in the hands of Union netminder Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, MA).

Just over a minute later, Ashley Smith (Verona, NY) shot a long ball that sailed just left of the Union goal.

Kelly Regan (Massapequa, NY) netted the goal for the Pioneers with three seconds remaining in the game, sending her high shot into the left side of the net from the right-hand side of the box.

Kaufman made 10 saves in the loss, while McDonald made one in just over 81 minutes of action. Sophomore Mia Simone (Rexford, NY) played the final 8:43.

Union held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks and a 17-3 lead in overall shots, but Utica was called for only four fouls to Union's 11. The Pioneers forced the Dutchwomen offside eight times in the contest.

Union is back in action in a 7 pm non-conference game against Williams College Tuesday at College Park Field. Utica resumes Empire 8 play on Saturday, October 6, in a 12 p.m. game at St. John Fisher.
