SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior Matt Wentworth's (North Andover, MA) header in the 64th minute broke a scoreless tie as the Union College men's soccer team went on to a 3-0 victory over visiting New Paltz at the Union Classic Friday afternoon. Union remains unbeaten at 3-0-0, while New Paltz falls to 0-3-0 with the loss.
Wentworth connected with a cross from freshman Dan Dubrow (Woodbridge, CT) and headed the ball past New Paltz goaltender Peter Carmel (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY).
Co-captain Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY) gave the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute sending the ball across the box along the ground for his third goal of the season. John Mara (Concord, MA) picked up his first career point with the assist as he drew out the goalie and fed Pietrak the ball up the right side.
Freshman Chris Chiodo (Scarsdale, NY) gave Union an insurance goal in the 90th minute. Chiodo collected a long kick from Dutchmen goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Westport, CT) and carried it past several New Paltz defenders and sent the ball rolling past Carmel for his first career tally.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with Union holding a 6-2 shot advantage. New Paltz's only shot on net came in the 28th minute when freshman Lucas Natel (Mineola, NY) carried up the ball from midfield before sending a low shot on the right which was easily scooped up by Kramer.
In the 37th minute, Pietrak fired a shot from 18 yards out that deflected off the chest Carmel and hung in the air before Carmel regained control.
Kramer earned his first shutout of the season with two saves, while Carmel finished with three saves.
