The two teams played and up-and-down first half, with the first shot of the game coming more than 15 minutes into the contest. Hebert put the Red Hawks on the board in the 29th minute, heading in the ball off a long service from Kevin Swift (Clifton Park, NY).
New Paltz forward Lucas Natel (Mineola, NY) came close to putting the Hawks on the board in the 56th minute with a direct kick from 20 yards out, but his low bouncing shot was easily scooped up by RPI netminder Alex Penny (Northport, NY).
RPI's offense intensified in the second half, as the Red Hawks notched a pair of goals on seven shots. Sroka tallied his second goal of the season with a low rolling shot from 16 yards out that slipped in at the far post. Junior Andrew Carter (Ballston Lake, NY) one-timed a pass from sophomore Ben Russell (Rochester, NY) on a fast break, lifting the ball past Carmel for a 3-0 lead.
The Red Hawks held an 11-5 lead in shots on net, and a 21-6 advantage in overall shots. New Paltz held the Red Hawks scoreless late in the second half, after junior Robert Mendes (Mineola, NY) was called for a red card.
Penny picked up his first career shutout with five saves, while Carmel made nine saves in the loss.
RPI is back in action at 7 pm on September 15 when they take on host Manhattanville in the first round of the Manhattanville Tournament. New Paltz hosts Skidmore in a 4 pm game on September 11.
