SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior center
Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) posted a double double with 12 points and a game high 12 rebounds to lead Union to a 62-60 women's basketball win over Hamilton in Liberty League play at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Dutchwomen improved to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the league while the Continentals now stand 7-6 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) also had 12 points along with eight rebounds for Union, while
Talitha Linden-Darrow (West Sand Lake, NY) added 10 points off the bench for the hosts.
Lucia Reed (Braintree, MA) had five steals and five assists for the Dutchwomen, who forced 19 turnovers and had a 44-36 rebounding advantage while shooting 35%.
Alex Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI) led the Continentals with 13 points and Sydney Fasulo (Lancaster, PA) had 11 points and seven rebounds. Pumla Sathula (Soweto, South Africa) had a team high 11 boards with eight points and four assists for Hamilton, which shot 38% for the night. Hamilton had a 30-27 lead at the half.
Ormsby's second of two free throws with 48 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Dutchwomen a 61-60 lead, and Reed made her second of two free throws with 18 seconds left to provide the final. Hamilton led 44-40 with 11:35 remaining in the second stanza but Union went on a 16-5 run in the next 6:03 (making it 56-49 with 5:32 left).
Rachel Scott (Colonie, NY) had a pair of consecutive three pointers and Ormsby had four rebounds during the run. But Hamilton tied it with a 10-3 run at 1:40 on a layup by Fasulo. It was tied at 1:24 with a free throw by Ormsby and Rogers pulled down a key rebound at 1:06.
Union hosts William Smith Saturday at 2 p.m. while Hamilton plays at Skidmore Saturday at 2 p.m.
