Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Clarkson ends Union’s record winning streak, 3-2

POTSDAM, NY – The 10th-ranked Clarkson University men's hockey team put an end to Union College's record winning streak with a 3-2 win at Cheel Arena Saturday night. Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, Alb.) and Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, Que.) tallied goals for the Dutchmen (11-9-3, 6-4-2 ECAC Hockey).

Union held an 8-5 shots advantage in the first period, but it was Clarkson who struck first, taking a 1-0 lead at 12:26 of the opening frame. Brandon DeFazio collected a pass from David Cayer and toyed with the puck before firing a wrister high past Union netminder Justin Mrazek's (Regina, Sask.) glove side.

Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, N.J.) took a long pass from Andrew Buote (Grande Prairie, Alb.) and beat a Clarkson defender as he cruised into the Knights' zone. Potts' low shot was saved by David Leggio and before Potts could get a stick on the rebound, he fell into the net and toppled over the Clarkson goaltender with just over 10 seconds remaining in the period.

Union had a multitude of chances in the second period, and after a series of misfortunes, converted on the power play at 11:58 to knot the score. Midway through the frame, Torren Delforte (Shortsville, N.Y.) chipped at a rebound, but the shot bounced off the net. Just over 30 seconds later, Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, Alb.) sailed in on a breakaway, but his shot careened off the post.

The Dutchmen capitalized right away on their second power play of the period. Matt Cook (Belle Mead, N.J.) dug the puck out of the corner and slid it to Presizniuk in the right circle. Presizniuk found Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, Que.) in the slot and the sophomore wound up for a one-timer that he placed in the upper left corner of the net for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Steve Zalewski gave the Golden Knights the lead four seconds after Union had killed its 19th-straight penalty at 15:59 of the third. Grant Clitsome slid a pass across the slot to the senior, who tucked it under the crossbar for his 15th goal of the season.

Union rallied late in the period and tied it up again when Presizniuk tipped a blast by Mike Harr (Norwood, Mass.). Harr wound up at the right point and Presizniuk deflected the shot on the ice past Leggio's stick side.

Clarkson retook the lead less than two minutes later when Shea Guthrie picked up the puck behind a Golden Knights' rush and lifted it past Mrazek just inside the right post at 16:35.

With 35 seconds left in the game, Union went on the power play, skating with Mrazek pulled in favor of a six-on-four advantage, but couldn't convert.

Mrazek made 24saves, while Leggio stopped 31 Union shots.

The Dutchmen kick off a four-game homestand with a 7 p.m. game against Princeton on February 1.
