SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore guards Aaron Trigg (Overland Park, KS) and Brady Bajema (Whitinsville, MA) scored 18 points each to pace Gordon College to an 80-62 triumph over SUNY Plattsburgh in the Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Fighting Scots, 7-2, face host Union in the title game Saturday at 3 p.m. while the Cardinals (7-2) take on SUNY Purchase at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
Michael Schnackenberg (South Portland, ME) scored 14 points and Jon Marstaller (Naples, ME) added 13 while Justin Kaufman (Redding, CT) tallied 11 with four assists in Gordon's victory. Senior guard Anthony Williams (Brooklyn, NY) had 16 points and made nine of 10 free throws for the Cardinals and Travis Gorham (Bridgeport, CT) had a double double with 14 points and a game best 12 rebounds. Plattsburgh was held to 39% shooting and had 18 turnovers, while Gordon shot 56% in each half.
Gordon had a 37-20 lead at halftime and the Cardinals got as close as eight twice in the second half, as late as 8:25 remaining at 53-45. But the Scots went on an 8-0 run in the next 1:22 and never led by less then 12 the rest of the contest. Plattsburgh had a 32-25 rebounding edge on the night while Gordon made 24 of 27 free throws (89%).

Union 86, SUNY Purchase 63
SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior forward Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY) posted a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and junior guard Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY) scored 18 points to lead host Union College to an 86-63 win over SUNY Purchase Friday night in the 2008 Sig Makofski Invitational at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchmen, in action for the first time since December 8, improved to 4-3 while the Panthers fell to 2-8.
The game marked the debut of Purchase's new head coach, Jeff Charney. The Dutchmen will play in Saturday's championship game against Gordon at 3 p.m., while Plattsburgh faces Purchase at 1 p.m.
Nick Ciresi (Kings Park, NY) added 12 points and Delon McAllister (Irvington, NJ) had nine rebounds and nine points with four assists for the Dutchmen. Drew Goldstein (Philadelphia, PA) scored 11 points for Union, which led 38-33 at halftime and shot 49% for the night. Purchase was led by junior forward Kazeeem Famuyide (Staten Island, NY), who scored a game best 19 points and pulled down a team high eight boards. Tyriq Harrington (Corona, NY) had 14 points and four assists and Maurice Richardson (Elmont, NY) had 10 points for the Panthers, who shot 41% and were outrebounded, 41-35.
Union led 40-38 with 17:58 remaining in the second half as Harrington hit a three-pointer to make it a two point contest. But Union then went on a 17-4 run in the next 6:20 when the guests called a time out. McAllister had all nine of his points during that run. Union then took the largest lead of the contest at 32 with a 76-44 advantage with 7:22 remaining. The Dutchmen forced 16 turnovers.

and added five assists with four steals to lead Plattsburgh to a 98-61 triumph over Purchase in the
consolation game of the 2008 Sig Makofski Tournament at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center
Saturday.
Williams was named to the All-Tournament Team after the championship contest later in the day.
Plattsburgh (8-2) featured a double double from Travis Gorham (Bridgeport, CT), with 12 points and
11 rebounds. Antwane Miller (Brooklyn, NY) scored 12 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
Ricky Rider (West Coxsackie, NY) added 10 points for the Cardinals.
Purchase (2-9) was paced by Tyriq Harrington (Corona, NY), who had a team high 17 points, while
Kazeem Famuyide (Staten Island, NY) scored 12 and Henry Ferrarin (Irvington, NY) pulled down eight
rebounds. The Panthers had 25 turnovers on the day and shot 36% while Plattsburgh, which shot 47%,
had 20 more rebounds in the game (51-31). Plattsburgh had a 48-34 lead at halftime and had an 11-0
lead to open the game. The largest lead was 37 three times, including the final. The Cardinals are at
Fredonia Friday while the Panthers host SUNY Maritime Tuesday.

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore guard Aaron Trigg (Overland Park, KS) scored a game high 17 points
and was named the 2008 Sig Makofski Tournament Most Valuable Player in leading Gordon to a 60-49
win over host Union in the tourney championship game at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday.
The Fighting Scots improved to 8-2 while the Dutchmen now stand 4-4.
Trigg had 35 points, nine steals, eight rebounds and six assists in his two tourney games. Jon
Marstaller (Naples, ME) scored 11 points and Brady Bajema (Whitinsville, MA) added 10 for Gordon,
and both were named to the all-tourney team. Union forward Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY)
had 12 points and guard Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY) added 12 to represent the Dutchmen on the
tourney team.
Delon McAllister (Irvington, NJ) scored 14 points and was six for six from the line for
Union. Desmarais and Marstaller had eight rebounds each. The Fighting Scots shot 42% for the game
but 50% in the second half to erase a 27-24 halftime lead by Union. The Dutchmen shot 40% for the
contest and the guests forced 17 turnovers. Union had a 32-30 edge on the boards. Madej hit a three
pointer with 45 seconds left in the first half for the 27-24 lead. Union led by 11 with 5:15 left in the first
stanza. Marstaller made a three pointer with 16:49 left in the second half to give Gordon its first lead
of the day, 31-29. That started a 19-6 run in the next 7:46 and the Scots led by as many as 13 (60-47)
with 1:08 remaining.
Union is back in action on January 8 at Western New England. Gordon hosts Regis on January 10.

SIGMUND "SIG" MAKOFSKI
A 1926 graduate of Union, Sigmund "Sig" Makofski was Union's first basketball player to achieve first-team All-American status and was also an honorable mention football All-American. He played pro basketball with Kingston and Utica in the New York State League, and with Patterson in the old ABL, which evolved into the NBA. Makofski was an outstanding golfer, setting numerous records at local courses. He taught and coached at his alma mater, Schenectady High, then at Mont Pleasant High, with a 26-year career basketball record of 461-35 (92.9%). His teams produced six undefeated seasons and had winning streaks of 46, 42, 39, and 36 games. During one multi-year stretch, his teams won 98 of 100. Sig also coached Mont Pleasant's football team to four undefeated seasons and guided the Red Raiders' golf team to a pair of New York State championships. A former Schenectady City Councilman, Makofski had a plaque honoring his coaching accomplishments in the "High School" section of the old National Basketball Hall of Fame. He was among the five charter inductees to the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He was a charter inductee into the Union College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.
