GENEVA, NY — The sixth-ranked Hobart College soccer team and Union battled it out to a scoreless double-overtime draw in Liberty League action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The unbeaten Statesmen move to 11-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference, while the Dutchmen now stand at 6-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the league.
Both teams had multiple opportunities to score, but senior Hobart goalie Pete Van Dellon (Webster N.Y.) and Union's senior netminder
Rob Kramer (Westport, Conn.) both came up with big stops when it counted.
The Statesmen had a chance to score in the first half at the 32 minute, 22 second mark. First-year forward Tommy Hayes (East Northport, N.Y.) took a shot off a corner kick from first-year midfielder Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn.), but Dutchman
John Mara (Concord, Mass.) was there to make the team save.
Another opportunity came in the 54th minute, when senior midfielder Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen, Germany) fed the ball into the box to senior midfielder Tyler Webster (Acton, Mass.). Webster got position behind Kramer, but his header was just high.
Schoeniger had a chance of his own on an open net in the 87th minute, but after he got by Kramer, his shot narrowly missed wide.
The Dutchmen also had opportunities. In the 99th minute of play, Van Dellon made a big save on a shot from Union junior
Ryan Banagan (Albany, N.Y.). Sophomore Dutchman
John Manna (Acton, Mass.) had another chance to tally for the visitors late in the second overtime. He got behind the Statesmen defense, but Van Dellon thwarted his attempt to get a shot off by coming out to smother the ball.
Hobart held a slight 18-14 advantage in shots, and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Van Dellon finished with seven saves in his league-leading seventh shutout of the season, while Kramer collected eight stops.
