SCHENECTADY, NY -- For the first time since October 24, 1980, the Union College field hockey team defeated William Smith Friday at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchwomen downed the #16 Herons, 3-0, to end a 24 game series losing streak. Union improved to 7-2 overall and evened the Liberty League record to 2-2, while William Smith fell to 8-3 overall and also 2-2 in the league.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME), junior midfielder Molly Osborn (Sunderland, MA) and senior midfielder Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT) each scored for Union, which had a 19-5 shot advantage and 9-2 advantage in corners. Senior goaltender Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) made two saves, one in each period, for the shutout.
Katie DeKraker (Westport, CT) and Chelsea Snyder (Cortland, NY) each played a half in the William Smith nets, with DeKraker making one save in the first half and Snyder stopping 10 in the second stanza.
Powers notched her team best sixth of the year 10:50 into the contest when she deposited a rebound from five yards out to the right of DeKraker. Just four minute later, the Dutchwomen led 2-0 when Osborn potted her first of the year. She took a pass from Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) from seven yards out and moved in a bit before scoring to the right of DeKraker's cage. Hanson added insurance in the second half with her fourth of the season at 47:12. Snyder made a save and the rebound kicked out to Hanson from 10 yards out.
Union defeated William Smith, 2-1 at Cortland in the New York State Championships in the only previous Dutchwomen victory over the Herons. The teams had tied 1-1 on September 29, 1990.
Union continues Liberty League play Saturday at home against Rochester at 2 p.m., while William Smith plays at #20 Skidmore Saturday at 2 p.m.
