SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman left winger Emile Arseneault (Rothesay, NB) scored her first career goal in the Union College women's ice hockey 3-1 loss against Vermont on Saturday at Messa Rink. Arseneault fought through a Vermont defender, walked in on goal and fired a backhand shot past Vermont keeper Caitlin Whitlock at 16:53 of the third.
Arseneault, whose goal was set up by junior defender
Jackie Koetteritz (Breckenridge, CO), provided an offensive spark that led to the Dutchwomen outshooting the Catamounts 6-4 in the final frame. The freshman had two other similar scoring chances during the period, but was unable to get the puck past Whitlock.
Senior goaltender
Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) turned away 30 shots, while Whitlock (six) and Ashley Walenty (12) combined for 18 shots. Whitlock earned her first win of the season.
UVM produced all three goals in the second period. Chelsea Rapin, Melanie Greene and Erin Barley-Malony each had markers. Greene and Shannon Bellefeulle led the team with two points each.
Rapin found the back of the net 2:34 into the second, while Greene scored at 12:34. Bellefeulle set up both goals. The Catamounts final tally came with 46 ticks remaining in the period by Barley-Maloney.
The Dutchwomen controlled the place for the majority of the third and produced a great scoring opportunity when freshman right winger
Adelle Calahan (Skokie, IL) and freshman left winger
Lauren Cromartie (Shellbrook, SA) raced to a two-on-one. Calahan fed the puck to Cromartie and the slot, but Whitlock made a glove save while going into a half butterfly.
Union's key defensive stop of the game came when it killed a 2:30 five-on-three early in the first period. However, Vermont answered shortly after with a two-man kill of its own.
With the setback, Union goes to 0-4-0, while Vermont improves to 2-0-0.
The Dutchwomen return to Messa Rink for a weekend series against Wayne State beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17. Game two follows on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
