Dutchwomen Open With Thriller Against Boston University

Lundy Day
SCHENECTADY, NY – A power play goal by junior defender Jackie Koetteritz with 41 seconds to play produced a frantic finish as Boston University held onto a 3-2 win against the Union College women's ice hockey team in the season-opener at Messa Rink.
"After the first two periods we got it going and did really well," said head coach Claudia Asano. "I was very impressed with the third period and if we would have played that way the whole game, who knows what would have happened."
The Dutchwomen's showing was a contrast to last year's 6-0 lost at Boston University on Nov. 3.
"The game last season was probably the worst one of the year for us," Asano said. "Tonight we were able to come from behind and get back into it. These are the steps we need to take."
Senior goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) displayed why she was an All-ECAC Hockey selection a season ago, turning aside 37 shots, including 16 and 15 in the first and second periods.
Senior right winger Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) tallied her first goal of the season and 20th of her career with a power play tally 7:46 into the third period to pull Union within one (2-1). The play started with a shot from the blueline from freshman defender Dania Simmonds (Aurora, ON) that got deflected and ended up on Pococks stick on the doorstep. Sophomore center Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA) was credited with the third assist.
Boston got goals from junior defender Sarah Appleton at 18:34 in the first, sophomore left winger Jillian Kirchner at 14:24 of the second and freshman center Jenelle Kohanchuk at 12:38 of the third.
The Dutchwomen successfully killed two back-to-back penalties early in the contest and threatened when they held a man advantage at 12:11. Off the ensuing faceoff, freshman defenseman Chelsey Heinhuis (Chatham, ON) ripped a shot from the point, which was redeflected, causing Boston goaltender Alllyse Wilcox out of position to make the save.
The Union faithful received a taste of the speed of the incoming class as right winger Adelle Calahan (Skokie, IL) showcased her quickness by winning battles in the corners and giving the Terriers defense difficulty breaking out of their own end.
However, Appleton broke the scoreless tie at 18:34 in with a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot. The goal was set up Kohanchuk and Kirchner.
The second period resembled the first with BU containing much of the play in the Dutchwomen's defensive and Day continued to turn away the Terriers' opportunities and helped kill a power play at the 17:40 mark.
Kirchner got her name on the score sheet again at 14:24 of the second on a shot in the slot that beat Day low on the glove side. Senior right winger Gina Kearns and Kohanchuk got helpers on the play.
After Pocock cashed in, Kohanchuk gave her team another two goal lead on a wrist shot from the high slot that handcuffed Day and trickled over the goal line.
Koetteritz's goal came on a 5-on-3 power play and was set up by Gentile and Pocock. Asano elected to pull Day for the remainder of the game, giving Union another two-player advantage.
With time ticking down, the Dutchwomen worked the puck around the offensive end, but the Terrier defense didn't allow a shot and senior goaltender Allyse Wilcox skated away with a 12-save victory.
The Dutchwomen return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 for a 4 p.m. contest against Northeastern at Messa Rink.
